The death toll increased to 144 after one more patient succumbed.

The new cases were drawn from Nairobi (67), Mombasa (17), Kajiado (nine), Machakos (nine), Kiambu (eight), Uasin Gishu (four) while Nakuru, Kilifi and Narok recorded two cases each.

Aman described the sharply rising COVID-19 cases in the country as depressing but was quick to state they should not be a cause for alarm among citizens.

The disease, he said, could easily be contained even before a vaccine was discovered if Kenyans adhered to wearing of masks, social distancing and regular handwashing among other guidelines issued by medics.

"While this might be the greatest health crisis facing our nation, our resilience and the never say never spirit will make us overcome this just as we have done before with similar challenging situations. The number that we have been providing may appear to be depressing and indeed they are. These numbers suggest that it is only a matter of time before all counties register at least a single COVID-19 case. This should not make as panic but it should strengthen our people to strictly adhered to the containment measures so as to prevent widespread infection within the country," said Aman.

As of Monday, June 29, at least 10,280,397 people across the world had contracted the virus since it broke out in China in late 2019.

Some 5,580,959 others recovered from the disease while 505,145 had died.
